Who are we?
We meet every Sunday for worship at 11.00 a.m.
Worship in St. Andrew's Church is in English.
We are a small international congregation of many different nationalities. If you're new to Lisbon, you're especially welcome to come and make new friends.
This church has existed since 1866, and in Rua Arriaga since 1899. LOCATION If coming to church by taxi, please ask for Rua Arriaga (NOT Rua Presidente da Arriaga). The church is approximately a 10 minute walk from the Santos station on the electric railway line between Cais do Sodre/Estoril/Cascais.
The Church of Scotland is a reformed church, with a presbyterian system of church government (i.e. governed by courts of elders, with no bishops).
St. Andrew's Church in Lisbon is part of the Presbytery of Eurppe, which has churches throughout a number of major cities in Europe, providing English-language worship in the reformed tradition.
The Church of Scotland is committed to ecumenical co-operation with membership in various church organizations.
The church building in Lisbon is made available to other Portuguese speaking congregations - Methodists mostly of Angolan bakground, who meet early on Sunday and members of the Apostolic Episcopal Church who meet during the week.
We have around 60 on our Members List, with about 12 nationalities. Christian worship in all its variety is important to us all and some travel a long way to get to church.
We celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion once a month where all who love the Lord Jesus are invited to His table to know Him in the breaking of bread.
We also think that friendship is very important. That's why we have refreshments are worship on a Sunday and have a Church Lunch now and again.
The presence of childrren in our midst is wonderful, and they are well looked after in worship, participating for the first part, and then in the Creche/Sunday School during the rest of Sunday morning. We have good educational material for the children. We sing hymns old and new.
Humour is important to us and although we address seious issues through our worship, laughter is never very far away.
Being small in number greatly limits what we can achieve in the field of charity and social work. However, as individuals our members are involved in a wide range of caring activities.
We invited you to reflect on thesde words from the Bible. (from the Letter of St. Paul to the Philippians chapter 4, verses 4-8)
“Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice!
Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition,
with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable –
if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things.”
